Mt Ontake is erupting in Japan. Saturday's pyroclastic flow occurred down the mountain's south face. The Japanese military is rescuing over 200 trapped hikers from this 3,067 meter volcano that is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Plate tectonics movement account for this eruption. The Japanese islands are located where three plates share a subduction boundary: Eurasian, Philippine and Pacific.

This should serve to remind us that we live on a moving planet.
