At low speed, the steering wheel makes a weird creaking sound.

I was thinking CV joint or an issue with the power steering.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Electric steering assistance?

Nah, I don't use the City power steering.

It's still powered by an electric motor either way.

Yep new car required. Just got rid of a 08 Grande punto for 2k cause I wouldn't pay the €1200 to get it fixed.

    There's a huge difference between a 00 and 08 punto, stupid response.

    How.

Do you think it's worth putting that kind of money into a 00 car.

Wont cost anywhere near that if you are will to source the parts yourself. Get it scanned first. We were about to change the column in my younger brothers punto until I scanned it and got a torque position sensor fault back. New sensor was 15 euro so its worth finding out what the issue is first.

Good luck finding the steering assist that will work in the car unless they are buying a brand new one.

Lots of place recon them at a decent price.

It only creaks when the car isn't moving or at very low speeds. Otherwise its grand.

So did mine. Then I was driving along the motorway @ 120km and all of a sudden the whole steering locked on me. Scary stuff

Start looking at the suspension tops, they creak and groan with old age.

Failing that, I am going to mention steering rack..... :(

Very common for the electric steering motors to develop faults. First job is to scan the steering control module for fault codes. Depending on vehicle year and build, somesteering assemblies are fully able to be repaired, newer ones (especially ones with torque sensor issues) required complete replacement. I would recommend contacting BBA Reman in UK as they turn these around all the time and I have had no issues with their replacment units. Then get your local mechanic or PM to arrange having the unit removed/fitted and calibrated.

Nah. Both built by FIAT. Both will randomly fall asunder for no discernible reason.

    :pac:

Well it was a 400 quid car, I don't plan on keeping it much longer, it'll get it looked at by the mechanic and we'll go from there.

Easily checked. Just jack up the front (do each side separately 1st and then try it with both wheels up) and see if the noise disappears/lessens when you turn the wheel.
Also worth turning the wheel with the engine off (electric steering will be also switched off) and see if the noise is still there. This doesn't eliminate any steering rack issues, but at least it will let you know if the EPS itself is the problem.

Good advice thanks. We're gonna try that later when I get home from work.
