Suit/tie/shoes combinations?

    Hi,
We're tying the knot next Summer (second-time around, 60+ and 50+)
The dress is a biscuit/beige kind of colour, my suit is a charcoal grey three-piece with a solid burgundy tie. That's the decisions so far....
We're stuck on the shirt colour. White of ivory? And the shoes. Black or brown? Er...and socks? (Colour, not wear them or not!)
    Advice, suggestions and opinions appreciated!

    Here's my tuppence worth...

Shirts should always be white. Shoes for a formal occasion (which the wedding is) should always be black, and lace up. No slip-ons!! Given that you'll be wearing a charcoal suit with a nice burgundy tie, that's the only way to go, TBH.

Oh - and black socks. No colours!! :D

    HTH and Good Luck!

I like socks that match with the tie... :)

Shoes should match belt, with charcoal suit I'd go for black.

It's a three-piece suit, so there is no belt.

Shoes and socks should be black. (The tie needs to complement the suit, not the socks. And if people start wearing brown shoes with a charcoal suit, where would it all end?) Shirt should be white.

You mean it's got suspenders instead?

No one is suggesting matching tie to the socks, that would be ridiculous.

You don't wear a belt under a waistcoat; it spoils the line and/or snags. You can wear braces, or just wear well-fitted trousers with a self-supporting waist (which is slightly elasticated). A three-piece suit generally comes with a self-supporting waist, but you can always discuss your options with your tailor.

You are suggesting that in post #3, though I do realise (and realised at the time) that you were speaking tongue-in-cheek.

Not at all, matching socks to your tie is completely different to matching tie to your socks. It's like wearing a red dress to go with your red Ferrari, over buying a blue Ferrari to go with your blue dress... I know of guys who match socks to tie and always thought it was kinda a nice flash of colour. The black socks are just so boring and dreary, but that's just me. I only have 1 pair of black socks in the whole drawer, but then I don't wear suits :p

Well, of course, the truly refined dresser will match both his socks and his tie to his underpants. True, nobody can see his underpants, but he knows that they match, and this gives him a confidence and an élan that makes him stand out at once from the common run of men.

ha ha... I've never seen someone's underpants when they sit down, but socks are quite easy to see as people have pants tailored to a correct length, which shortens when they sit....

Hang on Tony. I think they are only getting warmed up.
What colour is the car anyway?:)

I read somewhere that socks should match trousers so that when sitting and socks are visible they are like an extension of the trousers visually.

A rule I always went with was leather with leather and natural with metal, so any buckles/tie pins should be the same colour metal and belt/shoes/wallet should match too.

    Enjoy your wedding!

I'll find it hard to enjoy the wedding by the time I've checked out everybody's colour co-ordinations!
And the colour of the car? Er....by the time everything else is paid for, the car will probably be a silver colour with a green diagonal TAXI sign down the side!

Black shoes with a charcoal suit, brown would only work with a lighter grey.
Also, get some plain oxford captoes ideally, or at most a quarter brogue.

Definitely try to avoid loafers and derby's, which seem to be the shoe of choice for vast majority of men.

White shirt is best imo. Try to make sure it has a decent spread collar and naturally ensure there is a decent knot in the tie, ideally with a dimple.
