Hi guys, i am doing a project on Beam and Block flooring system and having some difficulty on collecting information on the background of this method, such as where it originated from and for how long it is being used for, i would also appreciate if you could tell me what types of floors are most popular in Ireland and if Beam and Block flooring is frequently used in Ireland.

    Best Regards,
    Edvin

Exactly. "Old" and Mid 00's. And even then it was out of date.

We do a lot of building in the UK, where it is still popular. It is singularly awful - and I have pictures from sites to show why.....

It is awful for fixing things to - has no mechanical fixity. It is as far from airtight as you can get.

We built 3 fabulous houses in Surrey on it a while back, for different clients, and without exception the owners said 'never again'. When I pressed one on why go to the trouble of building a high spec house, but to use B&B for foundations he told me it was the price. He got the foundations for a 270m2 house for 4k. He felt it was too good a deal to walk away from.

When we were trying to fix columns etc it was a nightmare, and orthogonally to the beams the end blocks could be just kicked out with your shoe.

Can you tell me how you have arrived at a decision to use it ? Have you considered airtightness and thermal details etc etc.

I would always start with the premise of a slab or raft foundation as the 'standard' and work from there. You need to bear in mind that fill and concrete is much cheaper here than in the UK, so it's not as big a deal to do such here, compared to the UK.

I think the OP might mean an educational project as opposed to a project where he is building something?!

Try to find a 70s/80s small Irish building with a basement and a concrete floor OP. Think pubs or places like that. Then if you talk nicely to the owners they might let you in for a look and if you're lucky there will be no ceiling in the basement!. Before the days of hollowcore it was all the rage in smaller buildings that needed solid floors.

Not sure what your existing level of knowledge is but just in case:

It's essentially a lot of upside down T shaped beams with blocks standing on their edges spanning from T to T.

We used a small bit as an infill floor section in Dublin airport.
It proved quite useful to use in a tight space that didn't easily allow placement of Hollow core or even shuttering.
The block and plank proved to be a quick and efficient solution for that situation but in general it's a non runner and I wouldnt usually consider it.
