    Hi do i need a uv filter if i am pumping water from butt to machine or would a cotton cartridge filter be sufficient, any help would be great, cheers

    When you say machine do you mean a washing machine?
    You can use filtered rainwater for toilet flushing, washing machine and gardening uses.
    There is a filter that is commonly used in milking parlours of all places.
    They are called 'Milk Filter Socks' and are about €12.50 for 100 of them.

    Also there is a video on youtube which shows these 'socks' in action

    There is also a video showing the use of the UV for drinking water
    Where the guy takes filtered water (but not UV treated) for washing/toilet and then the water goes on for UV treatment
