Leaving my job

    Hi, just want some opinions.

I'm working in an accountancy office that is going downhill. There is one person who bullies the staff and nothing is done about it. Pay is not good, and while I know money is tight everywhere, there are people doing less jobs than me being paid more.

I have no training or qualifications in this area. I was brought in to scan and file and was kept on. The leaders expect me to know things that I would only know by studying. I'm beginning to realise that I really don't know what I'm doing and my confidence is going down because of this.

I've applied for jobs in this area. I've had a few interviews but nothing yet. There are people leaving every few weeks in this company and I just wish I was one of them.

I want to go into teaching and was planning on working for a year or two after returning from maternity leave to save up and then leave to go back and study. But with the pay I'm on now, I'm basically working to pay childcare. I get one parent family payment but it's after being reduced because I'm working. Wanting to go to teaching aswell is what is stopping me from doing a years book keeping or payroll or accounts technician course as I don't see the point.

My question is - if I was to voluntarily leave my job, because I would - somehow - be able to save more if I was off, how bad would it look to future employers? I'm not trying to be lazy, but I just am not comfortable in this job any more.

Meant to say that the people I mentioned earlier that do less but are paid more, they also have no qualifications

if you quit to retrain into a new field like teaching i dont think an employer would frown too much on that after all you were training for a new career field.

if you ant to teach then do it. personally i wouldnt invest any energy training in a field i know i'm not going to be happy in. better to direct your energy at what you want to do and be happy about it.

Why not take advantage of the situation and ask your employer if they'd sponsor you for training as an accounting technician? It would take you about two years to do it and even if you did not stay on, you could always offer booking keeping services etc.. later privately from home - it might even finance your further education for you.

  • I left my job and took a year out to retrain for a completely different industry, was offered a job after the first interview I did. They were interested in why I'd made the choices I did but as long as you have a rational answer then an employer won't see it as a problem.
