That's probably way too early in the year for a "cheap" weekend, but best to ask the experts here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=881

Doubt that you would have snow in October. Not in the main ski places anyway.

First week of December would be the usual opening time of Val Thorens which is one of the highest resorts in Europe. OP 'cheap' and 'skiing' generally don't go in the same sentence but if you're looking to save some money then the first three weeks of December is a good time to go as lots of places have offers on to entice people. Val Thorens in the French Alps run a huge week for university students with discounts and package deals. You'll also find good value in Austrian resorts, a lot more so than France which can be very expensive. Avoid Iceland and Norway if you want to ski cheap.

Weeks 2, 3 & 4 in January are normally "cheap" also, with deals going in lots of places.

Christmas & New Year are peak times, then it's back to school for the folks with kids. It normally gets colder (on account of being Winter) as January progresses too. The result is that the results are normally pretty quiet. As February rolls up the school mid terms start, the weather improves, etc . . . so the prices go back up again.

Thanks for the help everybody but my idea was to go out of the holiday season when prices are low and surly there has to be sum hotel or somewhere to use a piste and rent equipment on some mountain range.

Possibly, but it would be very marginal skiing and you would run the risk of having no snow at all. There's a reason the ski season is called the ski season. You could try looking at one of the glacier resorts - they should be open. Try Kaprun near Zell am See. You can get good value flights with Aer Lingus, Lufthansa or Ryanair to Munich or Frankfurt, and good value trains down to Austria. There's local buses from Zell to Kaprun. After that though - ski hire & lift passes aren't the cheapest things in the world.
