Can somebody refresh my memory please. If somebody has just bought a used vehicle (date of sale Sept 10) and has received the logbook only tonight, is it possible to drive it legit by morning? It's got a valid test and Insurance can be done on a temporary transfer so the only concern is tax. Is it possible sort this online without having received a tax renewal notice and be driving legally before the tax office even opens? Grace periods are at the discretion of the individual Garda from what I recall, right?

Without a disc in the window, you can be done.

You might be able to go online and get the renewal pin (not sure if this is possible when tax has expired and car is sold) and pay tax and put receipt in the window while waiting for disc to arrive, but it is an offence for not displaying a valid disc if the car is in a public place.

Best go to tax office and get disc right away if possible.

The legal issue is "failure to display valid disc".
    No disc, no drive.

Thanks for the replies folks, I was hoping that things may have progressed and they would have just sent the tax renewal pin with the new logbook, but still a way to go yet.

you can recover the PIN online and tax it but that doesn't resolve the no disc problem

Once Shannon have processed the change of ownership, you can tax it at the Motor Tax Office, you don't even need to have received the VLC, once you can provide them with the name and address they have on their system.

Thanks folks. With a goods vehicle it turns out you need to get a weigh docket, declare it for goods use with RF111A and get it stamped by garda, then bring all that to the tax office and then they will change the usage class and you'll be able to tax it only then. I thought that process was only for when you import, but apparently it's for any change of ownership of a goods vehicle.

    didn't realise it's a goods vehicle.
