Renewal of driving license...

    Hi all,

I once had a full driving license which I got in the '80s. In 1990 I went to renew it and I was given a provisional license instead. During this period that I refer to, I was of the opinion that once you had acquired a full driving license you had it approximately for life unless disqualified by court or through illness. I was told this recently, but others say it wasn't so. My question is, has anybody else come across this problem? Has anybody else lost their full driving license in similar circumstances? I'd appreciate all responses.

If the full licence is expired for more than 10 years, you are back to square one - learner permit, approved lessons, test etc.

I think it is 5 years for a provisional/learner permit.

Yap you have to go back to square one again I'm afraid. I know someone in a similar situation. You need to do the theory, do the 12 lessons, pass your test. Then as another kick you will need the novice plates for 2 years.

The back in 1990 the law was that if your licence expired by more than 5 years then you need to redo the learner process (nowadays it's 10 years).

So, if the you opted for a 3 year in the early 80's and it expired in 1985 it is entirely possible that you could have exceeded the 5 year limit when you tried to renew in 1990.

    (4) An application for a driving licence shall be accompanied by—
( a ) where the applicant is the holder of a driving licence, such licence,
( b ) where the applicant is the holder of a provisional licence, such licence,
( c ) where the applicant, not being the holder of a driving licence, held a driving licence for any period within the period of five years preceding the commencement day, the last such licence granted to him,
( d ) where the applicant, not being the holder of a provisional licence, held such a licence for any period within the period of five years preceding the commencement day, the last such licence granted to him unless, subsequent to the grant of such licence, he was granted a driving licence,

As you seem to have never got a licence since, you're back to being a learner.

    [Update]
It seems from the 1960s up until 1989 all you could get was a 1 year or 3 year licence, The 10 year driving licence was only introduced in 1989 (SI 285/1989).
