i got free software from here http://www.easyobdii.com/ and bought a genuine elm327 lead from ebay (be wary of chinese replicas) and i'm up and running for next to nothing. it's basic enough but always been sufficient for home maintenance.

it covers most basics, read and errase codes, you can view and record live data from oxygen, map, maf, intake and coolant temp sensors, voltage and a few other little tricks. for a su €50 set-up it's grand.

Smells like scam to me, be very very sure it is actually useful and gives you more useable features than a $10 deal extreme Bluetooth elm327 dongle + smartphone...

If anyone here has a decent setup id be interested too?

I am been very cautious about it for the simple reason it sounds to good to be true but ,the guy has great feedback with thousands of sales.

Mainly what I need is a good variety of common makes petrol and diesel not to concerned if it cover 2013/14.

There has to be loads of guys out there using this stuff

You need to be more specific OP, is it for your own personal car or professional use?
If personal car, what model/year is it?

    The more basic the better.
There seems to be a significant number of readers out there, that try to interpret the code for you, only to come back with something like 'cylinder 6 misfire' on a VW Polo!

I think a lot of these overpriced packages are just looking up the generic descriptions for codes, instead of you googling it yourself, by manufacturer, engine, year, etc.. and getting the correct description.

Have a elm327 bluetooth I bought on ebay for about 10 euro came with a disc full of crap software

then bought troque pro from android play store for five or six euro

it has worked in every car that has obdII.

That link looks interesting but I doubt it would out class troque and certainly not on price.

For 50 euro you could buy a dedicated code reader on ebay.

I have a yoke for bmw/mini, 75yoyo. I'd say something that works for most manufacturers and models won't be cheap.
