I'm afraid to pull it in case I disconnect something, but what could it be for?

It's a white cable with some sort of plug under the driver seat floor and a little white box like you'd connect a telephone wire into?

Normally for the airbag located in the side of the seat.

Or for the motors if you have electric lumbar support or if you have electric motors to move the seat.

I'd prefer to know for sure what it is for!

Most cars will have an occupancy sensor in the seat so the car knows whether or not to deploy an airbag or not on that side in case of a collision.

Does it look like a black cable plugged under the floor and a white phone cable plugged into a wee white box?

It might be for the seat belt pretensioner. dont pull it anyway

    what's a pretensioner?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,569 ✭✭✭Special Circumstances

    what's a pretensioner?
A small explosive thingy that pulls your seat belt tight in a crash. Messing with airbag or pretensioners wires with key in ignition is likely to lead a red warning light on your dash at the very least if you do it wrong.

    Does your seat have:
    Airbags?
    Heating?
    Electrically moveable parts?
    A speaker underneath it?

No to all. There is an airbag in the dash.

I'm going to unplug the thing in the floor. I will report back.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 94 ✭✭Her name was Lola

Well, it's not a plug in the floor. It's a black box under the carpet with several wires coming out of it. I'll leave it alone me thinks!

Sounds like a good idea :-)

If car is driving and no lights are on the dash, don't go pulling on stuff.
Get an owner's manual for your make and year.

I have to admit I'd be prone to hystrionics and thought it was a bomb.

You may laugh. I got my Dad to come up and look at it and start the car. God I've been watching too many crime programmes!

Well, that can only apply to passenger seats.
Hardly any car manufacturer would assume there'd be no need to deploy drivers airbag, as sensor on driver's seat says that driver is not present.

I don't think I've seen yet a car with occupancy sensor on drivers seat.

I took the front seats out of a Citroen Berlingo the other day and disconnected block connectors from both front seats. The airbag warning light is now on. I am hoping it will just go out when I replace the seats.
