Hi, just wondering if its wise to buy a timing belt kit online and then the mechanic fit it. I have seen them online in Micks Garage.ie, would they be reputable? its for a '07 Berlingo. Thanks

    Yes and no,
It's probably ok but most mechanics want to source things themselves. Not because they can kick up the price but because they want to get a belt they trust.

Micks garage is over priced for most stuff, stick to a local motor factor on this one.

Call your local Citroen dealer. Citroen do keen prices on 'Superkits' that include belt, rollers and water pump. I'm looking at a Citroen advertisment in the Auto Trade Journal magazine at the moment and it gives the RRP for a B9 Berlingo timing belt kit at €145 and a trade price of €116.

EDIT: Both prices are ex VAT.

Probably wouldnt be an issue but ,If anything went wrong after the belt was fitted would it be the fault of the belt or the mechanic. One could lay blame on the other, Need to be careful.Unless there was a massive saving i think you would be better to let the mechanic or garage source the belt.

Shop around and get quotes for the work, incl parts, from a few mechs around the area.

At least if you let the Mechanic source the parts then he has supplied them to you and therefore the parts are his responsibility if something goes wrong.....in a perfect world of course, but at least you have some comeback.

When it comes to Belts most Mechanics prefer to use 'Gates' products....it might cost you an extra Tenner/Twenty or so but they are considered head and shoulders above the competition.

In fact a lot of consumers will insist on a Gates Belt.
I have absolutely no affiliation with the Company, but nearly thirty years of hearing Guys asking for one particular Brand Name must mean they do something right.

Apologies to any Reps from other companies

mgbs post pretty much sums it up while I wouldn't refuse to fit parts supplied by a customer it would be on the strict understanding that there was no warranty from my side at all. If I supply the parts and there is a issue I can claim my warranty for parts and labour. If in the case of a timing belt that could include the price of rebuilding a engine due to a faulty part.
