Van tax

My van was off the road for certain length of time last year while being repaired but due to illness I missed the deadline by a few weeks to declare it off the road this year until its repaired. I tried tax online but because it was more than 3 months off the road I had to go to my local tax office. When I enquired in the tax office even though I was prepared to pay the 3 months tax I was told I couldn't tax it without the DOE. I am now in a situation where my van is still off the road and I can't declare it off the road or can't tax it! Has anyone a solution to this . My worry is if my van is not repaired before the next quarter and is still off the road and I can't DOE it I am going to be caught for another 3 months tax because I can't tax it .

A legitimate loophole is that there is no backtax if the van changes hands. It shouldn't be the case , but it is.

Just wait until you are ready to put it back on the road and "sell it " to a friend/relative, and buy it back later.. Naturally this doesn't (or shouldn't) apply to any vehicle that has been on the road untaxed.
