I'm trying to do my silage calculations. I can do the fresh weight calculations but one of the pits is high dry matter and i cant find out how to work that one out.

    pit one 983 m3 at 46%dm
    pit two 529 m3 at 23%dm

I worked out the fresh weights as being 756T for pit one and 407T for pit two.
pit ones 756 tons of fresh weight silage will feed 94 cow for five months but at 46%dm how many cows will it feed.

    Thanks in advance.

Try this app if you`ve got an Android smart phone. It will tell you how much the cows will eat per day and how far you can stretch the feed using concentrates

Fresh weight to dry matter just multiply by the dry matter percentage of im not mistaken?
For beef animals they will eat 2% of their body weight in dry matter each day, not sure what the figure is for dairy cows...

347 kg of dry matter in pit one, whats your demand per day?

demand is 6.25 tonnes a day.

If a 600kg cow eats 2% of her body weight in dry matter of 20%dm silage she would eat 12kg dm which would be 60 kg fresh weight. but the same cow eating the 46% dm silage would only need to eat 26 kg of fresh weight silage to get 12kg of dm. would i be right in assuming the cow would eat in between these fresh weights of the dry silage maybe 45kgs fresh weight a day

Only seen your response now, in theory the 26kg of fresh weight 46% dry matter silage would be sufficient. She will drink more water though! I'm up for correction on this. Where abouts in Monaghan are you?

Your demand isn't 6.25 in dry matter terms though is it?? How many cows are you feeding?
