    Hi

Just bought daughter a new laptop as part of her 1st year in University. When I rang Aviva who insure my house contents to add it on as a Specific Cover - they advised me that since the Laptop will not be kept overnight in the house - they cannot insure it??

Would anyone know if that is the case with this type of Insurance??

What other options is out there?

That sounds right as your house insurance will only cover damage, theft to the item if it's actually in your house at the time. The place you bought the laptop (if it was a physical store) would generally offer an extended warranty or insurance.

Yeah that seems like a no-brainer to me. It's not contents in your household, ergo why would your HOI cover it?

Generally there are a few protection plan companies online, I can't think of any names off the top of my head. Generally for protection you would get it from the purchasing store, and yes it's a good idea at least in a student's first year of college to insure the laptop because they will learn how they abuse it, either through wear and tear or other means. Students such as myself are inherently the roughest on our gadgets. If my ultrabook wasn't given to me gratis I would both have a plan on it, and have already made claims about it (5 minutes to sleep and/or shutdown, aint right, it's got issues that need diagnosing)

However bear in mind, if they dont have proetection and the unit fails, they aren't entirely doomed to failure, just doomed to be inconvenienced: any institution worth its salt has machines on their campus for a student to perform work on. It is far less convenient, but, if she ****s up her laptop, thats her fault and those are the consequences. She doesn't *need* the laptop, and if she is a hard worker she can survive without one, but it is certainly convenient to have one, absolutely. Professors will work with her limitations if she winds up not having her unit. Only rarely have I seen teachers "require" hardware in a classroom environment and I have at the same time seen them make reasonable accommodations for students without hardware for reasons including the unit being out for service.
