British James I shilling I think, hard to tell with those pictures. So it's probably one of these, which one exactly is down to you to check as we can't see very much:

janja, I have merged your new thread here into this existing thread. I also deleted the thread which had no images attached. Please make sure to stick to this existing thread if you have any further coin queries. There is no need to open a new thread for each new coin.

There's dozens of books on Irish coins specialising in different areas. If you're just starting out a must have small book is 'Coins and tokens of Ireland' by Seaby. You see people with this book in hand at the coin fairs all the time. Incidentally the Coin fair is coming up in a couple of weeks and you'll find these books there, so no need to order online if you're intending on going.

Forget about the prices in any of these books, the one I mentioned is from 1970 but even the more recent ones are never accurate, that's just something you need to learn as you go along.

Thanks Blade, will pick that up. Another q for anyone willing to share info re irish coin collecting- when i am looking at irish coins on the internet ie ebay and adverts.ie the prices commanded dont seem to reflect anything that the irishcoins website states.. therefore i find the whole area of pricing coins confusing. I just bought a nice collectors book of half crowns and florins (not in great condition and not a full collection) for €240. but this seems ok from what i have seen coins selling online... although not what the irishcoins main website states prices are.. has anyone any advice on buying coins online.. and why are people willing to pay what seems like way over the odds for them on these sites?I bought a coin yesterday on V coins, an Australian website, a half penny 1953 uncirculated, for about the price recommend on the website, which is 8, (I paid slightly more due to postage) . If I had bought this on adverts.ie or ebay, they would have commanded double! Therefore, can anyone enlighten me. I know coin fairs are probably the best value but I am a distance from dublin and not travelling at the moment
    Thanks

The prices you see on eBay and adverts.ie are asking prices, what the vendor will actually get is another matter. On both sites you can see how long the item has been for sale, that should give you an indication of whether the vendor is asking a market price or if the price is completely off the wall.

thanks, i did question a seller asking big money for a well circulated 1940 penny and they took it down shortly afterwards... i try to be carefull but think i was caugth with a 1930 half crown.... which i ended up spending way too much on... you win some lose some i guess... trying to stay off ebay for a while.. and visit a coin shop in cork, see what coins they have on offer.
