    Hi,

I bought an imported car on Irish reg and now registration is cancelled by Revenue?
I cannot contact the seller anymore, phone switched off.
Cash deal so no reciept, I am just hanging with car with no motor tax.

Motor tax will send me RF100 to pay tax and I can try that.

This seems like a new scam by dodgy dealers.
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/leaflets/guide-methods-payment-vrt-traders.html

I think I got burned but dont know wha to do. Did found the guy online who sell me the car but he is dodgy so I wouldnt fancy being in a mess with him?
What are my legal options. Feeling depressed and cheated.
    Cool Rider.....

Correct me if I've understood this incorrectly.
You have bought a car which I'm assuming was a UK import but it had an Irish reg.
You have gone to tax the car for the first time and the Revenue Commissioners are cancelling the Irish reg which was issued by them?
I believe talking to both the Revenue and the Guards is your best bet.

Your story doesn't make sense. What do you mean revenue cancelled the registration? Did the seller VRT car and pay by cheque which bounced and so you have to pay it to get the car registered or what exactly do you mean?

Was it registered with incorrect details?

No the seller was selling the correct irish reg car which checked out fine on motorcheck.ie but subsequently cancelled by revenue.

What did revenue say when you queried this cancellation?

Please don't say you haven't queried it....

A bit of advice...ask a seller to bring a license or passport to the sale to prove their ID, I always do and generally honest sellers have no problems.

I hope you get a decent outcome. ..its a scummy thing to happen.

I still am unsure what happened.
I am getting different response from motortax, revenue and vrt section (ncts).
Just got off from a call with NCTS(vrt section). They say it should be ok. That said initially she said vrt is not paid on it then she changed her statement when I provided her all facts. Cant help but to laugh at the process.
I guess I have to keep my fingers crossed and try not to freak out till its certain that it was a scam.

Not able to get in contact with mobile provided on the advert and no motor tax paid in Ireland yet seems to be a big issue for concern as well.

I would have thought its fairly straightforward; either its registered or its not? Would they even issue the registration without payment?

For the seller to get rhe Logbook they would have to pay motor tax!

There is a deferred payment system for dealers - maybe the issue is something to do with that?

I doubt the dealer will tax the car - for imported cars that they have registered themselves they probably give the buyer a first taxation form, similar to when buying a new car.

Well, you wont get a reg number until the VRT is paid, It could be a clone.

Could be imported exempt from VRT and sold for cash before 12 months is up...

I was referring to private individuals, didn't realise it was a dealer.

If he/she is a dealer then should he not just go back to the garage/house of purchase?

The OP is not completely clear is it - I took it to mean a dealer, but not the reputable sort that you can necessarily return a car to!

    Trying to piece this together...

OP bought a car from an independent trader and no invoice, receipt, or proof of purchase was provided by the trader - yes?

OP was made aware at the point of sale that the car had been imported - yes?

Trader appears to have applied for an Irish registration number for the car but not paid any VRT owing or a registration fee - yes?

A dealer is obliged to pay VRT on a car before it is delivered to you:
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/vrt-guide.html#section9

If you end up having to negotiate the VRT on a imported car, you need an invoice from the seller:

There is no deferred payment but a deferral of the registration obligation. If it has a reg number that, prima facie, is evidence of registration.

Given that details are scarce, could this be a new scam based on the relatively new export rebate.
Scammer exports car to uk and gets registered into friends name on uk plates. All legit. Rebate is paid to Scammer.
Scammer then returns car to Ireland, sticks old irish reg on it and sells it cheap.
Car will likely check out fine until the tax office realise the Car shouldn't actually exist.

    Hi All,

Just an update, I spoke with motortax Shannon and they have placed my name on the car and motor tax paid this morning awaiting logbook and motor tax disc now.
But I think the whole process is very shady and it need to improve asmany instances where seller disappears after the sale leaving buyer in the limbo to sort out everything.
TBH I am still worried and keeping my fingers crossed tha I dont hear any neative news on this transaction.

    ffffffffffff

Best thing to do when buying a car is to bring a priority paid envelope with Shannons address on it.
Sign the book and both you and the seller pop it into the envelope and bring it together to the nearest post box.
That way you know the book is on the way to Shannon and the seller can't keep a hold of it.
