I'm not what you mean by realistic ones as in looks or playstyle like Arma

if you mean looks then some good cartoon style ones are Team Fortress 2, Loadout and Battlefield Heroes which are all free to play
Planetside 2 is also free to play and is very popular
and another free one you should try is Warframe

other ones are Battlefield series, 3 and 4 are currently the kings
The other big one is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
    other big ones are Titanfall

CS:GO is making big waves ATM. Titanfall is my personal favourite multiplayer FPS in the last 5 years I think. Planetside 2 is free and HUGE in scale and playerbase :)

Thanks folks for the recommendations so far.

Yes I mean the likes of Arma when it comes to realistic FPS

BF3 and Titanfall are my recommendations. Team fortress 2 for runner up.

CS:GO is easily the most popular and imo the best shooter on PC atm.

-Nice and easy to get into with the match making, so you'll rarely get placed out of your depth.
-Lots of depth and constantly being updated.
-Skins and such are pretty cool and add to the swag factor.
-Great competitive scene if you fancy getting into it a bit more.

Worth a punt at least since its very cheap.

I got Titan Fall and its quite enjoyable but what the hell is the point of having grunts

Why they make the actual players numbers so small is annoying

Is Call of Duty: World at War still a popular game online these days?

Gotta +1 Titanfall and Planetside 2.

Titanfall's writing is awful, but nobody's playing it for that. It's smooth, it's fast, it's really well-balanced (I love how the losing team gets a chance to flee to extraction and salvage a few hundred XP from a game, while the winners try to hunt them down or destroy the evac ship for even more XP), and it's got jetpacks and giant robots and lightning guns. It feels very much like the best bits of COD 4, gelled together with the best bits of other fun games and a good kick up the arse.

Planetside has a daunting learning curve, and the necessity of paying attention to other squads and leaders means there's not much instant gratification, but if you have a half dozen friends to form your own squad and a willingness to cooperate with others, it's deeply satisfying. And the sheer epic scale of the battles is just unmatched by any other game.

Not sure but its one of the best COD's for me(Along with COD 4). Nothing like no scoping a guy across the map. And i dont mean that in a quick scope/no scope kinda way,i mean literally no scope on the rifle just iron sights:)

Ive been tempted to pick it up recently,it can be got for about €10 but the dlc is still a bit too expensive for my liking. Wouldnt mind hearing myself if it still has a following, might make me bite the bullet and buy it

Not so much. Most COD games with the exception of COD 4, are pretty much dead on the PC,especially the newer ones. I fire up OCD 4 every now and then to get a COD fix and never have any problem getting a game. Can be a bit mental though jumping into a game with 100 people running around a 12 person map.

Really? I was playing MW2 less than a month ago and never had any problem getting a game. You are limited to Team Deathmatch or Hardcore TDM though because the number of players in the lobby are stuck and no one goes outside those two.

I was actually surprised by MW2 in that for the month or so that I played I only met maybe one hacker which was a significant improvement over the last time I played. The only remaining problem was the noob tubes and I swear it is worse than I had ever seen it before in some matches.

MW3 also still has loads of players, seemingly in all match types. After I got sick of the noob tubes I through this on for about a month and there were very few hackers again (more than mw2 though). In the end though I just had to uninstall it because a) I have no control when playing multiplayer games and wasn't going to bed before 4am and I was so tired for the last hour or two I was just getting frustrated and b) getting spawn killed because of stupid spawning system and c) the times I was playing (1am -5am) meant I was rarely playing anyone around Europe so the lag was killing me (or at least that is what I was telling myself :) ).

Instead I installed TF2 and just started playing this for the first time in the last week or so. Thoroughly enjoying it at the moment and I'm not getting half as frustrated. It seems a lot more balanced as well and just a breath of fresh air compared to COD.

Why would anyone play modern warfare 2 multiplayer on PC. Player hosted servers in an fps game that is multiplayer focussed is beyond stupid.

That game was awful from day 1.

MW2 was the start of the end of COD for me,the last one i really liked was world at war. With zombies mode and co op campaign there was enough variation in it to keep enjoying it well after MW2 came out.

Enjoyed MW2 for about 4 months and then it just turned into frustration,COD was never the same for me after. I do like zombies though so may pick up next years one if zombies looks good. Wouldnt bother with the MP though.Too many other good shooters out there now that are competing for my time

I actually really like MW2. However, it is not without its flaws. The biggest, which was common for all CODs was the amount of hackers. Aside from them, if they had gor rid of noob tubes and sorted out commando I would have been very happy. I think I got more enjoyment out of it now than anytime previously

Player hosted servers = unplayable mess.

The first modern warfare was far superior. MW2 was the start of the downfall of that franchise on PC for me.

It turned into a console game from MW2 onwards.

I refused to buy a single cod game since mw2 it was that bad.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is a brilliant game. There are still people playing it as well.
    Just frantic and fun.
