We are trying to organise our annual shooting weekend away and are trying to find a good walked up shoot. Something on the lines of a bit of walking with a few small drives. We've shot Glennoo a few times and would like a change this year. Has anyone out there shot at Baron's Court, Coolattin or Bracken Hill or anyplace else that they would recommend. There's usually between 4 & 6 of us and we like to do 2 50 bird days back to back. All suggestions would be appreciated

Have a look at drumbanaghershoot.co.uk its in Armagh. They do mini driven days that are very good value.

Everyone seems to have good things to say about Fiach Dowling and Coolattin. I read that article today in the Shooting Times, 360 odd pheasants, a serious day but I'd have to remortgage the house!! Is it mainly big days he does or us he willing to talk us poor folk with our limited budget

What way do these days work? Do you pay for a day or per bird shot, what are the costs, I'd love to do something like this but always had it in my head it costs more than my car!!

Generally on a full driven shoot you need a minimum of 8 guns . I shot drumbanagher last year on a semi-driven shoot last year with 4 guns much more craic than a full driven shoot though the bag was much smaller!

Generally walked up is per bird and we were paying £22 to £25 in the North depending on the shoot. You agree the bag in advance so say a 50 bird day is £1250 and we would divide this by number of guns. High bird driven shoots would be dearer probably £30 per bird + and some of the days they sell would be 300 birds or more. Serious money but very addictive!! You can sometimes get good value at the end of the season where the keepers want to clean out the birds and we have got some great shooting on these days. Last year 6 of us shot around 90 head of proper driven birds on a top estate for 300 Euro a man. We shot during a storm and they were rockets. Fired over 650 rounds so had a brilliant day.

Something to be careful of though is that you don't shoot too many handy birds particularly on the first few drives. Lads can get trigger happy and your day could be over before lunch or you could be facing a bigger bill than you planned for.

Definitely have a go at it if you get a chance.

Some shoots charge a fixed price per gun for a days shooting. So everyone knows exactly what their day is going to cost before they go. Paying by the bird is fine if shooting with a like minded team of guns. But it only takes a couple of them to be not as selective as the others and your day can end up being very expensive.

Too right. You wouldn't believe how excited normally steady lads get when flocks of pheasants, ducks & partridge are put over them. At a shoot in Scotland I nearly the take guns off the lads to stop them shooting handy ducks. This was a last drive when we already had the bag shot and the bill was beginning to mount rapido!! Some shoots are decent and allow for a certain amount of overage as they call it but for others every bird is counted. Still lookin for a spot. All of the ones I've contacted so far are fully booked. Recession must be over :-)

Lads can't recommend Ballyward shoot in Co.Down enough. Host's are great and will taylor a day to suit your needs. I shoot here regularly and love it, they do both duck and pheasant with decent fliers and changeling shots to taste the best of guns.
They have a Face book page and are on guns on pegs.

Shot it last Christmas with the lads. Good shooting, some cracking birds and very nice drives. Easy lads to deal with too. Shoot as many or as few as you like. Think there was about 9 of us shooing and bag was around 150 birds. Shot a woodcock the same day as did one of the other lads. Far as I remember was around 22/23 stg a bird. Sterling making it very expensive to cross the border so don't know if I'll be there this year. Stayed in the carrybridge motel just 5 minutes from it. Basic accommodation but clean and great steaks and breakfast :-)
