    Can this be sim unlocked for free, through rooting or any other methods?

    Also what is the latest Android I can put on it, it's currently on 4.3 its been a while since I've android devices, is this relatively new, any point in going any further up?

    Not sure of the first bit, but it's an old- ish so if it's out of contact you can get the operator to unlock it.
    If you want to stick with a Samsung based rom you're stuck with 4.3 but Omnirom is 4.4 so there will be loads more
