David Gibson Street Photography Workshop in Ireland

To make everyone aware, David Gibson, a well known and influential street photographer from the UK is scheduled to hold a workshop in Cork on the weekend of the 17th of October.

In my opinon its a great opportunity to get a chance to see how a renound and exceptionally skilled street photographer works, and question him on his thought processes, as these type of things usually skip across Ireland.

I went to sign up today but found there is very little interest, to the extent that the workshop could be cancelled. If this is down to genuine lack of interest, so be it, but if its simply down to people being unaware, well that would just be a shame so mentioning it up here in the hope enough people sign up to make the workshop worthwhile to host.

If its ok, im posting a link to the details here, mods, if this is against the rules, dont hesitate to remove it. Its not an advertisment, i have no affiliation with the studio, I just want the workshop to go ahead and so make sure as many people as possible are aware of it!

I honestly think he might get more interest if the workshop was in Dublin. I would love to attend this but it being in Cork is really not possible!

The other thing is 185 euro is a lot of money for some people.

On the location, it would be more convenient for a lot of people, including me if it was in Dublin but nobody in Dublin thought of hosting him.

On the cost, I think it's quite reasonable. Go to any training course to further your career and it's min of 600 quid a day and probably closer to 1k. I don't see why just because it's more of an artistic pursuit should cost pennies. Remember the Chap is comming from the UK so has flights and accommodation to consider, along with making it worth his time to spend his weekend coaching people.

Well, there are 2 of us and we're trying to book a place - but no answer so far actually. So we'll see!

two more, excellent, this may go ahead after all!

Give them an email. I got a pretty quick response. I know the studio is pretty new so they may not have a receptionist or could be doing a shoot.

    I am Interested in this.
I would be traveling from Wexford and think it would be best to have an over night stay on the Saturday. Are any of ye planning the same?

I'll be staying at home :) It'll be an hours drive but my budget dictates!

Would happily meet up for dinner or a couple of drinks though on the Saturday if anyone wants to.

Yep.......any particular hotel? The studio is smack bang in the middle of the city so parking will be expensive on Saturday.

I've heard great things about the Killarney Guest House on Western Road, especially that the breakfasts are amazing. Haven't stayed myself though!

Here's hoping it goes ahead :)
    Saturday 18th October. 11am -5pm
In the morning David Gibson will introduce the workshop by showing an eclectic mix of the history and masters of street photography. This will include familiar names such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and Elliott Erwitt but there will be a strong emphasis on lesser-known photographers too. All the photographs shown will be those that have particularly inspired David. In a second part, David will offer some suggestions for projects, from fellow In-Public photographers and himself. One of these projects will be an assignment for the workshop.
    Lunch break
The afternoon will be spent taking photographs with David in Cork before returning to the studio at around 4.30 for a recap and any questions for the next day.

    Sunday 19th October. 11am - 6 pm
Meeting again at the studio where for part of the morning David will continue his presentation which will include projects and different types of street photography.
    Lunch
There will be a few hours out and about in Cork again taking photographs before returning to the studio at about 4pm for the final session. This session will be exclusively on giving feedback and discussing work old and new from all the participants. Participants are encouraged to bring older work to the workshop for consideration.

I really like the sound of that, time spent in and out of the studio and feedback too is always good.

The B&B I was to recommend - I had the wrong name, I meant to say the Garnish House! Worth checking out for sure.

Just saw this - what a pity!!

got the ambassador for 70 per night. Seems to be rated as average but 70 is not that bad for Cork. A bit farther to walk, but still only 15 mins to Patrick Street.

Such a brilliant weekend, buzzing a little this evening :) Really good workshop for me, learned a lot and looking forward to getting out more and putting it into practice.

allgood, particularly excellent 2nd shot of the lady and her child. I waited around for ages beside those blue & white line drawings of people waiting for people who mirrored them to walk by but got nothing!

Great shots Sir - well done! It's mad looking at them again and remembering his comments and critique - it has definitely made me think differently. It was surprising for me, not just for my own work but when looking at others work too - shots I loved he just flew over and the ones he stopped on were not what I would have paused on before! I can see now why though :)

As was mentioned already, I was taken aback by his analysis of shots, picking out ones I wouldnt give much time to and skipping across ones i initially thought very good. Some of that is experience, some just personal preference and i wouldnt take it that the ones that were skipped across were rubbish, they just grab David's attention.

It was my fav part of the weekend, seeing what everyone else got, as we were all out in the same city at the same time, yet the variety was brilliant. Really demonstrated how the same scene can look completely different through different eyes.

Below are some of what I got over the weekend. I usually would not post so many images but as it was a workshop and the aim was to take a decent sample, im going to post a few more than usual. I think I have one that I will still be happy with in 6 months, the rest will probably not stand up to my ruthless editing!
