I've found a few older threads on this topic but just wanted to get up to date knowledge/informed opinion.

My car rental voucher for San Francisco mentions that an IDL is 'usually required' when renting outside the EU. These guidelines seem to be generic rather than specific to the States. Everything I've found online seems to suggest there isn't a need for an IDL in the US as the Irish driving licence is in English. Has anyone had any problems renting in California without one? Too late to get one now without some extreme levels of effort and expense (live outside of Ireland).

Rented a car in California with EU driving licence. No problems at all.

The International Driving Licence is not a licence, it is a translation of your licence. Important if you are Russian or Japanese, but not needed for an English speaking country.

However, as far as I'm aware, none of the major US rental companies will accept any other form of payment besides a credit card.

Alamo will accept certain debit cards, once you can provide proof of a round-trip ticket.

It appears Enterprise & National do likewise.

    Currently being discussed here
