what is the job prospect after 1 year of big 4 experience in the industry or practice?
How would it be seen leaving your contract after one year because of exam results?

Depends really. Do you want to stay with ACA and move to another firm. Or are you looking to change industry and get out of accountancy altogether? If you want to stick with the exams then I would stick at it. If you've a year done already the rest will fly by and the qualification will stand to you.

In saying that, my boss failed all his CAP 1 exams (or whatever the equivalent was 10 years ago), left his contract and moved to another firm. He got his act together and did really well in his finals.

in relation to the jobs market, its generally not a good move.

After 1 year of audit, your options will be to move to a smaller firm or look at industry. In industry, you'll be looking at an AP role or assistant accountant role paying maybe €25k. Remember you wont have much experience for these types of roles, but if you are academically strong, you can have a better chance of getting something.

In practice you'll be looking at less than that salary wise. You also bring into play that you may not get as much time off for your exams.

If its a move you have to make (for whatever reason), it can be done, but it just not the easiest one.

PM me if you want to know more. I have specialised in recruiting accountants since 2001.

I did this. Went into funds after doing one year in a big 4. It stood to me that I completed the full year with the big 4 firm. I maintained a goal of getting my acca exams

@Johnny_Fontane - do you have any experience in how difficult it is to move from accountancy to a management consulting role? Can it be done or would I be looking at graduate opportunities?
