    hi

I've just got a quote of €850 from a tiler/plumber to do the following in a small bathroom in Kildare

Tile walls (21 sq m) and floor (4 sq m).
Remove old tiles around shower (2 sqm of tiles)
Replace old toilet with new toilet
Replace corner shower door and glass panel
Replace old rad with heated towel rail

I will supply all the tiles, adhesive, spacers and grout.

Is this a reasonable quote or should I look to reduce it?

Get at least 2 more quotes from good tilers. That way you will know if it's too much.

I had intended on getting at least 2 more quotes, but just wanted to get a benchmark first and see what's reasonable for the required work.

well look at it like this...

    Tile walls (21 sq m) and floor (4 sq m). (2-4 days)
Remove old tiles around shower (2 sqm of tiles) (1/2 day?)
Replace old toilet with new toilet (1/2 day)
Replace corner shower door and glass panel (1/2 day)
Replace old rad with heated towel rail (1/2 day)

Sounds like about a week's work all going well (or how long did he say it would take?).
If hes insured etc and good, its a very reasonable quote - even if it only takes 4 days.

1/2 day to replace a toilet and 1/2 day to add a shower door seems a bit excessive, no?

Yeah probably - Im being generous allowing for possible hiccups since i dont know full details. But in saying that, the least amount of time that job is going to take is 4 days.
IMO 850 is a good price (provided he's insured, paying tax on it etc etc)

Why are you getting a tiler to change your toilet and fit a radiator. If I was spending that money id be getting a plumber to do it right

I love seeing you people on the net lol. Yous are as thick as champ.

I'm a tiler and I can change a toilet, fit a radiator no problem. In fact I've fitted out whole bathroom suites and not a complaint yet in my 20 years working. I can also plaster outside/inside, block lay and concrete work but hay, sure just because I'm a tiler by trade, you people think we can't do other jobs lol.

Op, you've no need to get a plumber in if this guy can do it himself. Its a real easy job and only involves opening a few fittings and putting new ones in and draining the system abit to fit the rad. Where are ya and I'll price it for you.

    Tiles 3.5 days @ 120 a day (maybe4 if there's messing about)
To replace new rad, new toilet and glass panel, 1 day @ 120 a day.

I'd be getting a plumber in to do my rad or jacks, simply because if it goes wrong, I have a bit of comeback with the Plummer, I'd have feck all comeback with a tiler.
Likewise I wouldn't get a Plummer to tile my bathroom, yeah he might be able to do an ok job, but I want someone to do a brilliant job.

Well I'm a plumber by trade and I'm sick of going out to bathrooms where a "qualified " tiler/ jack of all trades has made a complete balls of a rad valve or cracked a toilet bowl, or re used the old multiwick or cross threaded a compression thread and has loads of ptfe tape on it and there's leaks everywhere

At the other end of the scale, I've even fixed some plumbers work that wasn't done right so not all plumbers do a good job and I'm not doubting you that some tilers might have ballsed up but the fact of the matter is, there's tilers and plumbers that can do both jobs. Ya know, we weren't born tilers or plumbers and with the right attitude and experience, anyone can do both jobs.

O here we go with wording OK and brilliant lol. A tiler can do a brilliant job with this small plumbing work. Its an easy job ffs

Couldn't agree more. I'm well able to tile myself and only recently did my own bathroom. I took my time and did it right, and tastier than must tilers I've come across too. I know there's a lot more to other aspects of tiling that I know nothing of as I'm sure there's plenty of areas of plumbing you wouldn't go near too

OP, you need to check if removing the bathroom radiator from the system may cause a bigger problem with your heating system.
Older systems often had the bathroom radiator as the bypass.

He's replacing it, not removing it. And what's all this about a "bypass" rad????

I don't know what country you live in but you will not get a qualified, insured tradesman paying tax and vat to work for €120 per day.
Labourers are getting more than €120 on building sites in Dublin
If a tradesman isn't charging €200 per day you can be sure some of the above are missing eg insurance etc.
Ask to see their insurance. Especially if they are tiles claiming to do plumbing. Or plumber claiming to do tiling. Some can do both but unfortunately most just think they can.

O here we go lol. Listen, I have very few overheads in my business, mortgage free and own all my own tools, van, garage outright and I'm happy enough with a basic living without any debts so I can assure you I manage to get by well OK with charging this rate. Its also one of the reason why I'm never out of work. Ya know, some of us are smart in this country with never jumping in the deep end and needing to charge crazy amounts to get by. I'm also over 200 miles away from Dublin so you can think again about your comments and get back to me lol.

You are blatantly telling un truths here. It is impossible to be fully insured, pay taxes, accountant, vat, & run an insured commercial vehicle & charge only €120 per day. A father of 2 living with his wife comes out with as much on the dole as you say you charge after all of the above have been paid for.
You are a troll. Next time do your maths before you quote stupid figures here.
There is an accounting forum here. I suggest you give those figures to them. When I say it is impossible, I mean it is impossible.

Labour court minimum wage is much more than €120 for plumbing.

Then stop giving advice on what a legitimate tradesman has to charge with overheads, tax, insurance,VAT + a lot more, without the benefit of the Castlebar DOLE OFFICE.

    It's a small world.

And you have the neck to say your about to take up flying lessons.

    Have fun.

    As you keep saying: LOL
