Renault Megane/Non-starting

    02 Renault Megane.

It appears, that if I park it facing one way (possibly into the prevailing wind), it wont start in the morning, (or rather ir only starts after while).

But if park it the opposite way it starts every time.

Parked in different place yesterday, mid morning tried starting it many times, battery fine, but not starting up. Leave it for 30 minutes, started up first time.

Tried starting the car just after midnight, wouldn't start.

At 12 noon today, with the sun on the bonnet, started first time.

I've had a few mechanics to look at it, but they can find nothing wrong with it.

    Any ideas?

I presume when you say the battery is fine, that the engine is turning over normally but not firing?
If so, then it would be worth having a look at the crankshaft sensor. It doesn't tie in much with the differing weather conditions but a very likely candidate with this vintage megane.

Sound Johnayo, thanks...I'll get that looked at. The garages haven't picked up on anything yet...maybe u need to know the model with these things?

Had the same problem with a megane I had

Turned out to be the crank shaft sensor. Easy job to replace that you could do yourself

    Cheers, folks much appreciated.

I just checked the fuse box and the lid was open a good inch or more. :( It looked in place but it was just sitting on top of the unit. Probably been like that for years.

I wonder would that explain the possible temperature theory?

    Could do.

Dont forget to seal the aerial (if you have the original installed) as they are prone to leaking. What can happen is that once they leak it'll short the immobilizer resulting in the car being an expensive paper weight

Oh blimey! the LED display on the radio has recently faded away to nothing...hard to see, is that another possible warning sign that this damage is taking place?

No that means the bulbs in the dash are gone.

Again a very easy fix. There are torx screws under the speakers in the dash on either side, open those fellas up, take the dash out and replace the bulbs.

Bulbs cost a few euro. Total job time bout 30 minutes. Again you can easily do it yourself

Attaching 2 photos of the fuse box, that seems to have been open to an extent.

It doesn't seem as dusty to the eye as it does in the photos, it looks well dusty now!!

Does this need a good clean up? if so it is just plain old dusting down of fuses and re-inserting? Or should I leave well enough alone...really appreciate all of your help..

Dust won't do any harm , but corrosion looks present especially as this was open to elements for years , really it's the under Neath of whats in the photo that the potential problem ie pull it out of its housing and look for bad connections under Neath , also pull out those box relays for evidence of bad connections, could be crank sensor too, though, but I've had to replace whole fuse boxes before , depending on symtons , time to talk to auto electrician or mechanic.
