Is a wedding special rate a myth?

Twice I have contacted a hotel about a wedding rate and have found the room for less than the so called 'special' rate!

Ditto. Generally 'discounted' wedding rates are a scam. You are generally better off shopping around via the hotel comparison websites online.

It not necessarily a discount rate, but nor is it a "rack" rate which you would pay if a hotel is nearly full. What a wedding rate does is reserve a number of rooms for guests at the wedding at a reasonable rate and ensures that if the hotel is full and there are still rooms from the wedding allocation, then those rooms will be sold at the wedding rate and not a higher rate.

If you book early, you may get a better rate by booking through a booking engine or through the hotel's website - problem is only a few rooms are usually at the headline special offer rate and once they are gone, rate goes up.

Works the same way as group travel on airplanes.
