Why did you post this article about me? I'm going to kill you and your entire family!!! But it's going to be a slow painful death & I'm going to love it.

It seems these terms get bandied around a lot. Antisocial Personality Disorder and it's narcissistic cousin exist along a spectrum -at one end we have our Ted Bundys and Peter Sutcliffes ; at the other people who say mean things on the internet. I think one is rather easier to deal with than the other! :-D

Apparantly those of us who comment and post are also more narcissistic than lurkers, but not much more so.

I call b.s. on this whole study.

First - it was done online. Do you really expect someone who says, online, that there favourite internet activity is TROLLING is going to be answering the personality question honestly?

Second - if you ask 1,200 people what their favourite online activity is, and *at least* 600 don't answer 'porn' - everyone is lying.

I often wondered how it would work. :D

If the article author had a Phd in Pshycology and not computer science she may have been able to figure out the deficiencies in the study.

I'm not sure porn counts as a hobby, possibly 'fapping to porn'? :-D

Thats how he got started on the scale. :)

I consider trolls to be like what Alfred discusses here:

    And the man portrayed here:

I think the best way to deal with them is the way Gandalf does:
Be silent! Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I have not suffered through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm!

We all have better things to worry about than trolls.

There are lots of trolls and some are really good and they're hilarious, but the very nasty ones - yeh, those traits seem applicable indeed.

Trolling in its original sense is a skilled, witty practise without malice.

What the media now refer to as trolling is just people acting the ****.

Trolling in its original sense is a skilled, witty practise without malice.

That's the misconception that brought trolling to prominence in the first place "ah sure, tis harmless".

Zero tolerance is the key. Swat aside like flies, non malicious and malicious alike.

Without trolls, boards and other internet forums wouldn't be half as interesting! There's a few on here I really admire but I won't name names. ;)

In this month's issue of Personality and Individual Differences, a study was published that confirms what we all suspected: internet trolls are horrible people.....Online trolls are prototypical everyday sadists....Both trolls and sadists feel sadistic glee at the distress of others. Sadists just want to have fun ... and the Internet is their playground!

    We knew this.

Ruin their fun by being happy.

What's wrong with wanting to see the world burn sometimes, there is too much of it any way.

The most insidious type of troll IMO is the "concern troll":

I'm inclined to agree Porsche but then again I've heard this term bandied around quite a lot, particularly when debating Feminists whose campaigns and demands frequently are counterproductive to their states aims.

As the Rational Wiki itself states:

"The danger, of course, is that not everyone with a concern is a concern troll - and not every concern is unreasonable. In environments of genuine groupthink, applying the concern troll label may serve as a means of enforcing conformity and punishing (or silencing) dissent. And even without actual groupthink in play, many Internet posters find dismissing an argument much quicker and easier than evaluating it. In addition, the term "concern troll" focuses not on what the person is actually saying, but on some alleged agenda. Thus, if misused, it is the perfect refuge for someone who has no counter to the actual argument: simply ignore the points made, allege some other position, and then accuse the other person of lying if they deny that that is what they're really saying. It's a combination of straw man and argumentum ad hominem: make up something to attack, and ignore their actual points on the basis that since the points were made by someone acting in bad faith, they need not be addressed."

I think the Rational Wiki hits the nail on the head here ; particularly if you're not trying to claim partisanship of a particular ideology or political body e.g you're a self proclaimed Atheist speaking on a forum for Christians.

I've also seen it once too many times the term being used to ignore valid points ; in one famous instance I was told that when it comes to rape the number of men who are falsely accused is so "negligible" it's not worth discussing - a point of view which is unlikely to win many men over!

It seems clear to me that if someone is trying to derail the issue and that there are sound reasons why the majority of people hold an opinion on a particular forum, there's no need for anyone to resort to name calling.

It's also equally possible that one or more dissenters may genuinely support a political aim or movement as a whole but disagree with the methods used.
