While of course we know Azumah Nelson held the WBC Featherweight title during Barry McGuigan's reign, but McGuigan did win the Ring magazine title aswell as the WBA when he beat Eusebio Pedroza. The Ring magazine title is often associated with being that of the 'real' champion and usually the lineal champion, although in McGuigan's case he arguably wasn't lineal, as the Ring only recognised Pedroza after the death of their previous champion Salvador Sanchez in a car crash.

Also from the point in time when Roy Jones jnr moved up in weight, Steve Collins wasn't just a World title holder, he was genuinely the best Super-Middleweight in the World. Although there is somewhat of an argument (not concrete though) for Frankie Liles being the lineal champion at that time.

So Rinty is our last lineal and true champion alright. Perhaps Frampton can change all that :P

Barry held an actual real version of a title. Pedroza was considered a great champion, and I believe he was on about 18 defenses or so over 6-7 years. Nelson was probably a better fighter, but at that time Pedroza had the real recognition. In them days a WBA or WBC belt was world class. The IBF was in its early years and was not considered near as prestigious as the the other two. I believe Barry also topped the ring ratings in the year 1985.

Ya McLarnin judged on either his record, or the ability he had for the era he fought in is clearly our best ever fighter. He beat more Hall of Fame fighters than any other fighter has.......ever !
Perhaps it's because he was raised and thaught how to fight in Canada, but it's amazing how little he is mentioned within Irish boxing circles considering how good he was and that there's plenty of footage of him about (check youtube for those interested)

Caldwell's claim to being World champion was countered by Eder Jofre's. Basically the American organisations recognised Jofre, the European ones Caldwell. When they met to sort out the dispute, Jofre was the clear winner. With that said Caldwell is every bit as much a World champion as McGuigan, and being one of just 2 men to have claim to being World champion is nothing to be sniffed at.
