Motor tax question

I recently purchased a second hand car. About a week later I received the new document.

I went to the guard station to get a motor tax form, which they no longer distribute.

So I went to the library for the form and the librarian told me that Shannon sends the updated information to the tax office and then the tax office mails me out a renewal form.

But I have received no such form and now am wondering what is the story. it has been at least two weeks. I don't have a pin so I can't do it online. Do I have to go into the tax office to do this?

Chooes the "forgot PIN" (or however its worded) and they will send you out a new one which should allow you tax it online.

Do you actually need tax, if the car already has a valid unexpired disc then you can wait until you get the renewal notice as normal.
If the car is untaxed then I suggest you to do it in the Motor Tax office asap, that way you'll walk out the door with the disc. It's illegal to drive or park in a public place without displaying a valid tax disc so the longer things go on the greater the chance of getting caught.

It does need tax. I had just trusted the librarian because she said her husband just bought a car and that's how it works, but I haven't received anything.

I emailed the tax office but they never replied.

I suggest you or someone on your behalf takes the time to go to the tax office in person. If you keep delaying things by waiting on forms and replies you could run yourself into trouble. A Gardaí would generally cut you some slack but he doesn't have to, and a Traffic Warden can get you too.

You can print off a copy of RF 100A here, fill the details and sign it yourself. If you can't get to the office yourself you could perhaps get someone else to drop in your signed form, hand over the cash and get the disc for you.

    Ok thanks.

When I went to the Guards for the form and asked them about what the deal is for first time taxing and transfer of ownership, the guard said "Dunno. Has nothing to do with us."

All new taxes for used vehicles need to be paid first time at the motor tax office. Don't know of any other ways to get it done. Just bring your registration certificate with you, fill the paper and pay at the till.

Ok thanks, I didn't know that.

Like someone above I went online and went for the forgotten/lost pin button. They emailed me a new pin and I could tax it online that day.

I've tried that a few times and when I do the server is down.

typical lazy attitude of the irish gardai, he could have at least pointed you in the right direction to go about getting your forms filled
