Drafting appeal letter over vrt

I'm resurrecting this old thread here. I was wondering how posters got on with appealing the vrt rates on the OMSP and on optional extras. I'm considering importing a car less than one year old, with a few extras such as leather seats, nav etc. I don't want the VRT to be much more than that quoted by the online calculator which is 10k. Anyone like to post their experiences of appealing VRT if charged for extras over and above the online calculator ?

I didn't think the online calculators had any place to input options, so I'd assume the price you got is without them.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Online calculator does not take extras into account and never has. Extras are dependant on the individual car so it's impossible to take every car out there with individual extras into account and have them in the VRT calculator, there would literally be thousands of variations. The VRT calculator is an estimate calculator and is not an exact figure.

Extras are calculated on the day of VRT inspection based on depreciation over 4 years and then as a percentage of the VRT rate. So a car that is a year old the extras will be valued at 75% of their original cost and VRT on them will be calculated as a percentage of that 75% value.

I am pretty sure you can only appeal once you actually import it and pay the VRT, you can't appeal pre payment. In lots of cases the appeals are accepted.

That's 100% true. A friend of mine was quoted 6 grand VRT on a 92 Sierra Cosworth a few weeks back.
He was told he could appeal it after he'd paid in full!
    I was gutted for him.
