Teaching english as a foreign language on CV

    Hi,

I am a secondary school maths and science teacher and have recently moved to Germany, as my partner has a job here for the next two years. I haven't been able to get a job in any of the local international schools so far, but I have an interview with an English language school next week.

I just wanted to see what people's thoughts were on how this would affect my chances when I go back to Ireland next year, or the year after, to look for a science teaching job again.

It's difficult to know whether it would be looked on badly by employers, as I won't be teaching science. Or perhaps some might look favorably on it, as I would be broadening my horizons. Or perhaps it would have no effect, positive or negative, and it would be treated like any other year of teaching on a CV.

Any thoughts or experiences would be much appreciated! :)

    Hiya,

I wouldn't be the best person to give advice on this as I am an EFL teacher and don't know anything really about how secondary (or primary schools) would view this experience. I would guess that they would be a lot more interested in your 'relevant' experience. But, I would say that it would look more favourable to them that you got a teaching job in a language school rather than going for an alternative 'totally unrelated' line of work (...obviously) at an office, for example.

At the end of the day, you have to make a living though.

Is there any way you could tie in the line of work you would be doing with science or maths. For example, would there be any opportunity at this school to teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in your field of science, for example?

I suppose another important thing could be 'transferable skills'. Maybe you could practise using ICT in the classroom at the language school (as an example) and then see is there any way you could incorporate things you have learned into science teaching in the future.

Also, you could play up the fact that you gained experience teaching non-natives. I am sure that you will be teaching plenty of non-natives in the future back in the Irish school system.

    Good luck with the interview!
