Getting married next May and starting to look at our wine and bubbly options as we are paying corkage. Just trying to decide if we are best going up the north to buy all our drink or do we go to the likes of O'Briens and get a deal.

Where did you buy yours if you had a corkage option?

I never found up North to be good for any deals for clothes or shopping..

Depends really on what brands you want. If you aren't too into the wines or well fussy fussy even think about your local Lidl and Aldi they do some loverly ones and you can bargain with them if you buy in bulk... Lidl Champers is lovely.

There is the boat to France too option I have heard great things about this but maybe it works best if you were planning a holiday there maybe.

There was a great thread here about how much people drank etc to see how much to get I will try and find the link for you...

Wait until after Christmas and get it in Tesco. We got lovely Wyndham Estate Bin 66 for about €4.75 a bottle. They had an offer of 2 for €10 to clear Christmas stock plus you got 5% off on 6 bottles or more. They didn't have enough stock in the store they were more than happy to get it sent from other stores and kept it for us.

    Well worth looking into :-)

France is good but is the amount you are buying too much to be considered enough for personal use? I've brought wine back from France a number of times. Always bought in the south from various places and then had it shipped to Cherbourg and collected it from there. You get far superior wines compared to what you get here for the same price.

Darn I stopped the updates from that other thread but I shall try and find

We got ours in tesco. They do a buy 6 get 25% off every so often plus my mother in law works there so we got an extra 10% off! Even without that, it would still have been worth it for us!

The only reason why i was considering the north was because of the tax thats on wine at the moment in Ireland, I dont think France would justify the cost of the boat and petrol down to rosslare etc. I think waiting until after christmas could be a runner

Suppose when you take petrol or diesel costs in it would probably even out..Keep an eye on the deals you should pick up something

We also got this deal (minis staff discount) and it worked out the best option.

I think the ferry can be quite cheap. It may not be worth it for the wine only, but if you're going to get a good bit of champagne (as opposed to sparkling wine) it certainly would be better value.

We got wine in the Loire Valley. 84 bottles of white and red, cost per bottle in France was €4, cost when petrol / ferry etc. was taken into account was €6 a bottle. Though we had free accommodation at the Loire Valley. We spent a week there trying different wines - it's not something you'd do on the fly unless you know exactly what you are buying.

I priced the ferry to cherbourg and you are talking €300, i think a trip up to Newry is more economical especially as i was looking on some of the french websites and to get some sparkling wine/champagne, its a lot more expensive.

I seen a 1.5l bottle of prosecco for £15 in asda which is twice the size of a normal bottle, i wonder if ill get away with only paying one bottle corkage, might be worth the chance

I would be interested to hear what you decide in the end. Is your wedding big? I know a friend did the ferry to France route but her wedding was small and she got wine that is generalyl very expensive here for a better price over there after she took account of all travel costs.

Never heard of the Tesco's route! Glad I have now...

and definitely would be interested to see if they charged you extra for a larger bottle of prosecco! Keep us updated!

I know when we were discussing corkage with our hotel, we were told it only applied to standard size bottles! Much to our chagrin

Ah dont say that  i must check the info when i get home to see if they specify in the terms otherwise big bottle it is (Watching lots of suits lately so find the loopholes :D)

Not a huge wedding just over 100 but trying to keep the drink within budget as everything else has gone over :(

We ordered ours from France. We paid approx €5 per bottle for the red and white and then got a good quality Vouvray for our sparkling wine which cost approx €6. We used a website which rates and awards vineyards (like the Michelen stars of wines) to pick ours (www.hachette-vins.com). We were lucky as we knew people travelling back via France who stopped at Calais and picked it up for us for free but I think it is not too expensive to travel over. We ordered enough for the day (130 people) and the BBQ the next day with some contingency and it was under the personal consumption allowance. We are both into good quality wine so wanted something decent and it paid off as a lot of people commented on it. It was really nice.

Keep an eye on Super Quinn too, if they are still running their wine deals.

Prosecco we bought at OBriens on one of their specials, €8.

Worth mentioning that we had no corkage.

It's in my local Tesco in Claremorris and it's advertised on their website so I presume it's nationwide. This offer runs til sometime early October (I can't remember the exact date!)

Just to bump this, O'Brien's Wine have 25% off all Prosecco until Tuesday at the moment (going to pick some up myself soon!).

If the wedding isn't until may you could pick a widely available wine and pick up a few bottles with the weekly shop.
Doesn't work out as any great deal, but I know a few couples that done it and they never really noticed the cost of the wine by the time of the wedding.
