Good job but don't enjoy it

    Hi,

Guess i'm just looking for some career advice as i'm feeling somewhat confused/lost. I graduated last September from university with a pretty good degree that enabled me to walk into my first job on a salary of 30,000 per year. It was only a temporary contract though and i'll be unemployed gain in March 2015.

It's a relatively low stress job with decent hours and good pay, but i'm not sure I wanna work in this area for another 40+ years of my life (I'm 24 now). I don't particularly have a passion for it and unfortunately when deciding my college course back in 6th year I went for a course which would enable me to make very good money (a fully qualified person in my profession earns around 80k a year) and also a job which would involve not much requirement to be extroverted (I suffer a bit with Social Anxiety).

Problem is, when weighing up the alternatives, i'm not even sure what else I would enjoy. If I was to change direction, would it be a matter of just trying loads of different jobs until I find something I enjoy? My interests outside of work would be soccer, guitar, gym, food, languages, writing and travel. I see myself as having a few options:

-Take the "pre-determined path" ,Continue in this career, become fully qualified and work at it until retirement, build a family etc and earn good money
-Continue in this career for another 2 years until i'm 26, at which point I will used accumulated savings to go to Australia and possibly work for a bit. Travel Australia, come back up through South America, USA and finally home at around age 28/29. But then after i'm home, what do I work as? Maybe a post-grad course in an alternative career?
-Go abroad in March 2015 to teach English as a foreign language maybe in Thailand or south Korea. But then what do I do?
-Attempt to build a passive income stream maybe by starting a money making blog.

I'm not looking for someone to tell me exactly what I should do, but as you can see i'm confused so if anyone has any advice at all to help point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. And apologies for the long post.

Few people now will ever work one career for life now. I am in my late 30's and recently retrained and am now starting a career in a new industry. You're only 24, you will probably end up doing something completely different by the time you're 30. but getting experience, even for a few years in your current job will stand to you regardless.

This is not a bad option depending on what your family aspirations are. Never discount life experience that travelling provides you with.

Do you want to teach english? or do you want to use that as means to travel the world?

This is not an easy thing to do. what are you going to blog about? might be good to blog while you travel, that would be interesting.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this, you are really young, most people of your generation will probably have 3-4 career industries, if not more. It's never too late to 3educate yourself in a different field either. A friend of mine worked for a multinational and did a 4 year course in counselling and psychology when working. she quit the corporate job when she was 46 to start work as a counsellor. Finally you mention: (My interests outside of work would be soccer, guitar, gym, food, languages, writing and travel.) You could do worse than further part time study in these areas with a view to a career move, don't rule out a move abroad to a bigger economy where there could be better job prospect in these areas.
