Didnt want to clog up the thread with my questions..

We're sick of trying to run two decent cars and are thinking of running one Bangormatic and one better car..

I'm looking at soemthing like this A4 Estate (or Avant if we're feeling European)

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/audi-a4-tdi/7669584
    33014649.jpeg

180K miles which while high isn't mad for years..

How confident would folks be that with average service costs this could do another 100k miles ?, I see quite a few for sale with 250K+ so it surely isn't impossible..
45+mpg, not got the DPF/flywheel issues/excessive sensor issues that modern diesels have..

****e photos so it's hard to tell. It doesn't look too bad.

It all depends on the condition, if it's been regularly serviced and drives well I don't see why it couldn't keep going for a good while.

That seller has a number of cars for sale and judging by the photos appears to be a dealer of some sort. In this price range I'd rather buy privately as at least your dealer with the owner of the car as opposed to a dealer who just took the car in as a trade-in/cast off and knows feck all about the car or it's history.

Don't expect anything in the way of comeback or warranty from a dealer on a car of that age either.

When I went bangernomics shopping, I found that anything older than 15 years old was nigh on impossible to insure through my company, so that's worth considering. I ended up looking at nothing older than 2001 for this reason. Bought a 03 Saab 9-3 2.0t in the end - great car with plenty of parts availability.

Does it even matter on a car of that age? Even talking to the current owner mightn't tell you much more about the car as most cars of that age have changed hands multiple times at this stage.

I'd judge an old car like that on condition rather than who owns it or who's selling it.

Well I'd rather be gauging answers to my questions from the person who has been driving it for a period of time over a dealer who literally only just took it in part exchange because the previous owner wanted shot of it.

keep a eye out for something else its not a good buy, high miles 3months test unless he takes 700e tops there are way better options out there.fair enough it has a bit of test but ehat happens in jan(just after xmass) it needs a couple of hun spent which is highly likely given age and miles.

180k miles is hardly high on a 15 year old diesel. Very few 15 year old diesel cars will have low mileage unless it was given a hair cut.

ahh that's fair enough :) For me I usually judge an old car like that on condition, I'd only be interested in talking to the owner they were the original owner from new. Each to their own though :)

Go on dd type in diesel estate, limit price to 2k there is any amount of fresher cars with lower miles under the 1500 mark tested and all.
