Worth going self employed

Im looking for some advise from you guys.
Im a carpenter based in the midlands and work for a company who supply and fit wooden floors and doors. There are 3 of us employed here but recently the boss has said he is thinking of getting out of the fitting end of things, leaving an opening for someone to take advantage of.

Having been employed by this man for the past 5 years we have our busy spells and quiet ones too so I am torn as to what to do. My partner doesn't have a job at the moment and with a young child I'm questioning whether it's too much of a gamble.

What would you do or advise would give

    Thanks

I've recently gone from a permanent job in IT to contracting and would be asking yourself the following:

    1. Can you guarantee a level of income every month that will cover your living expenses and allow you to put min. 30% away?
    2. Could you cope with a period of no work where you potentially qualify for only basic benefits?

If the answer to either is no, then don't do it.

Yea think you may have help make my decision, there is no guarantee in this trade so my answer to Q1 is no and likewise for Q2. I love my job and dont want to give it up but if needs must.
I think I just needed to hear it from someone else

    Am happy if I helped

Some self employed schemes do include insurance for sick leave, but it's expensive.
