Croi Beag Insert Stove - too close to smoke shelf?

I guess I know the answer to this already, but...

I'm thinking of putting a Boru Croi Beag dry stove into my fireplace. Unfortunately, it looks as though the the flue will be practically up against the slope under the smoke shelf.

My immediate thought is - OK, I'll get out my drill and break away the smoke shelf so that I can fit an adaptor between the flue and the chimney. Now I'm beginning to wonder - is this common practise or should I just be looking for a stove where the flue is better aligned (like a top mounted one)?

    Any advice much appreciated!
