    It certainly seems like it.

    The OP is correct.

There are way too many contrarians and holier-than-thous on this site.

Some people think it makes them look intelligent to take the opposing side. But all they can do is disagree, when you push them on it they start contradicting themselves. Have a few annoying people in my family like that.

People can be yeah, both on here and in real life, you'd tell them the sky is blue and they'd say it was green just to disagree.

Out there somewhere, thinking up more ways to be contrarian and holier-than-thou!

    I have friends like this.

No matter the topic, they'll disagree.

I've come to the conclusion over the years that it's because they can't articulate anything worth hearing in a group conversation so jumping on the opposite side/offensive gives them an opportunity to be involved.

Definitely. Three threads recently where being contrarian and edgy just seemed so important to people: Ian Paisley's death, the one about the kid with acne reduced to tears in the cosmetics department of a store, the thread by that woman who's had so much tragedy in her life.
Anyone whose mission for decades is to ostracise and incite hatred against a community is objectively not "a great man" - it's not celebrating his death to concede this, and the issue is not that he was unionist/protestant.
A sales rep in a cosmetics section isn't supposed to cold-sell and certainly isn't supposed to refer to acne as "sore stuff on your face", for which make-up is not the answer - she may not have been a bad person, just a bit silly, but what she did was objectively wrong.
A thread where someone just wants to let off steam about the awful things that have happened in their life - it is objectively dickish to post about how it's suspicious and to post about how it's ages since there has been a pity party. It may be a discussion forum but that doesn't mean everything has to be debated. There is a line when it comes to "Telling it like it is" and only a socially inept person wouldn't be able to see it. Sometimes (very occasionally, hardly a regular occurrence) just be a bit respectful to what a person's going through, try to have a bit of compassion, or just stfu - reading the thread is not necessary.

Is it allowed to link to other threads? I'd love to spend some time collecting the most needlessly contrary, supposedly cool transgressive posts and put them up here...
