From Injury to Super Runner (hopefully)

So, I've been lurking for absolutely ages but now the time is right for me to start my own log. So far I've not really needed the motivation of a training log on Boards because I belong to a club. However, a nasty achilles injury has meant that I'm no longer quick enough to train with my usual pals. Some external motivation is required - so here we are!

History: I've been running for 5 years now, started with Fit4Life and progressed to loads of races including two marathons. Developed insertional achilles tendonitis around 12 months ago. Have tried various treatments during 2014, including a complete rest during the summer. Am now getting treatment from the amazing Star Geoghegan and am allowed to return to easy runs only. I'm hoping to regain a little of my lost fitness through regular easy runs over the next couple of months, with a view to returning to full training when Star fixes me (that's called the power of positive thinking!).

    PBs:
    5K - 21.19 in Enfield, 2013
    10K - 44.04 in Dunshaughlin 2013
    Half - 1.38.30 in Waterford, 2013
    Full - 3.44 in Dublin, 2012

My goal is to get fixed, obviously! And to return to early 2013 fitness levels by next summer latest. Then I'd love to try to break six minutes for the mile, and beat my 5 and 10K times. Fingers crossed.

    Thanks for reading!

Best of luck with the recovery, though you are in the right hands as there is not better man in the country for getting you back on your feet IMO. You will surprise yourself with how fit you can get by next summer once you are fixed and get the head down.

Thanks a mill ecoli, just what I need to hear. Positive thinking and all that!

    My runs since 2nd July:

7th Sept, 3 miles, 10.18 pace. Great to be back!
9th Sept, 3 X 1 miles on the track at the back of the club training session, around 8.25 pace each.
    14th Sept, 3 miles, 9.43 pace
17th Sept, 3 miles, 9.04 pace. A bit fast, and I'm not fit enough to do that anyway

The plan is to do a week or two of these easy short runs and then throw in a few longer ones. Pace must remain easy though, physio's orders! Back to Carlow in around 10 days and fingers crossed for a bit of positive news.

More easy runs and so far no real difference to my appalling levels of fitness....

    Thursday, 18th Sept, 3 miles (9.19, 8.58, 9.16)
    Friday, 19th Sept, 5 miles (yahoo!) (9.50, 9.21, 9.38, 9.06, 9.31, average 9.30).
    Monday 22nd Sept, 3 miles (9.17, 9.27, 9.17).

9.30 pace is what's comfortable for these runs. Orders are to keep them easy so this is where I'll aim to stay for another while anyway.

My injury is exactly the same - despite all the stretches I'm doing - but I'm back down to Star in Carlow on Thursday so perhaps I'll have some news then.

Despite my lack of fitness and my inability to train properly or race, it's just great to be back out running. Getting out the house is wonderful (everyone is happy!) and the summer's weight gain has started to reverse thank god!

    Onwards and upwards :D
