I was on a 22 hour maternity cover last year. You loose a significant amount on tax. But I think you can claim some of this back at the end of the tax year when you get your p60.

You come out with about €1100 every 2 weeks. However, I found my paychecks differed quite often as you only get paid for the time you are in school. You don't get paid for mid-term or any days the school is closed. This higher rate of pay includes 56% holiday pay so this is taken into consideration if you need to sign on for the summer. You may not be entitled to the full amount. You should be saving as you go.

EDIT: €1100 is based on first point on the new payscale.

It will also depend on your point on the scale.

The gross hourly rate would be gross salary plus any allowances divided by 167 days and then divided by 4.5 hours per day

For an nqt that would be 30,000 / 167 / 4.5 to give €39.90 per hour.

44 hours per fortnight is €1756 gross per fortnight
    You then deduct

    Pension
    Sp and ch pension

They are taken off before tax

    Tax - 20% on the first €1252 so that's €250.40
    - 41% on the remainder - 206.64
USC - not sure of the rate but say 7% so €122
    PRSI @ 3.5% - €61

Then remove any tax credits you'd have, around €140 a fortnight.

I'd say you'd get €1150 or so but not 100% sure

Thanks for that everyone, just wondering should it be week four to expect first payment? Thought it should have been through today but no sign :-(

I covered a maternity last year and it took a long time to get paid at the start. This was because either the teacher I was covering hadn't handed in the correct paperwork, or because the school hadn't forwarded the paperwork to the department (I can't remember exactly)!

Sounds like it would be a good idea to ask the school secretary about it. As soon as I did that, things got sorted fairly quickly!
