Car for under 2000 and VRT Question

    Hello,

I was speaking to a co-worker today about his son buying his first car.
Basically he is looking at either a BMW e46 316i or 318d. Both of which can be insured for reasonable sums. Which one is the question, basically he is looking for opinions from everyone so I thought I would ask on here.

So would you have a 316i or 318d, given that the car will have to cost less than 2000 and be driven back from mainland Europe.

The second question is whether he could park up the car for two months and wait until the new year to VRT it. It is only because he won't be able to drive it until then.

    Thanks

the easiest way would be to VRT it upon arrival.

my biggest issue would be that it's hard enough to learn to drive as it is, without the added complication being in a LHD car in a RHD country.

if you had 2k to spend, why not just buy an Irish 316, or something nicer than a 316.

Just because the car costs €2k to buy outside of Ireland doesn't mean Revenue here will value it's market price at that figure. Revenue have a minimum value figure on VRT too irrespective of the Open Market Selling Price.

Also legally the car has to have an appointment made for VRT inspection within 7 days of entering the country and the VRT paid within 30 days.
