I am looking to get a small family car , have a one year old so reliability, safety and boot space are the main issues. Unfortunately I know little about cars but was looking at Toyota Auris, VW Golf or something along these lines.

    Any ideas or recommendations??

How much money do you have to spend?

    How many miles a year?

Hey sorry yeah budget would be about 10k , living in Dublin and round trip to work is 6 miles so I don't drive long distances. Very rare would even be on a motorway except maybe going west for the odd wedding

    Very low miles per year

    Some suggestions:-

    Honda Jazz:

Jazz is really from the class below the likes of the Auris and Golf but has almost more space and very practical boot. Very reliable too being a Honda.

    Hyundai i30:

    Kia Ceed:

i30 along with the Kia Ceed are pretty much the same car, very reliable and generously equipped.

Thanks very much for all that. A friend has an i30 and said he'd recommend it but the reverse being same gear as 1st gear put me off a bit but I guess you get used to something like that pretty quick. Will definitely check them all out.

A lad in work said to me at lunch , go for German, Japanese or Korean cars. From what I have read online seems like good advice.

Do Opel have a car in this class?

Opel Astra. I wouldn't be a big fan of them.

You won't go wrong with the cars Bazz suggested.

You could look at an Octavia if you want something slightly bigger.

Thanks for help, much appreciated. Will look at those, would these be better cars than say a golf or the same but better value for money

They will definitely have a less chance of costing you money over the lifetime of your ownership than a Golf or Astra.

but the reverse being same gear as 1st gear put me off a bit /quote]

    What?

I presume he is referring to the reverse gear being located up next to 1st as opposed to be being below 5th as on some cars.

I'd would recommend a VW Golf estate nice 2009 one donedeal in mayo for €9500, VW Passat 2008 for around €8000 or a 2009 one for around €9000 ish. Or a Audi A4 2008 really nice one in mayo on donedeal for €11950.
