Got an email from WDAI yesterday telling members about a number of complaints they received from members who had been approached by Game Dealers to be effectively middle men and to purchase deer off of hunters and sell them on to the Dealer with a markup for the middleman.

It also says that allegedly part of the approach is suggesting that if the middleman has a Trained Hunter qualification, then they can sign off on the carcass even though they did not see how the carcass was shot etc.

Apparently anyone who has the Trained hunter cert can sign off on a carcass as disease free and the pluck does,nt have to be produced with carcass at the game dealers. So only one person in a group of stalkers has to have cert, so he can basically sign carcass off for anyone even if someone is not one of his cronies. Now IMO, thats aload of Bollox. They are accually making it easier to sell wild venison than before, IMO.

Its very real a close friend of mine was one of the people approached and I know of others.

On making a mountain out of a mohill WDAI are the only organisation that have their finger on what is going on! Remember the NARGC told us we wouldn't be able to licence pump actions and .308's etc from February but the WDAI told us the truth, guess what happened?! They told us poaching was out of hand and there would be increased prosecutions, what happened?! I could go on but if you think they would issue a statement without knowing the facts, you'd have to be sticking your head in the stand on what the game dealers are up to!

Its also worth mentioning, they clearly stated "Any individual who partakes or supports such an arrangement is committing a crime as the sale and purchase of wildlife is strictly licensed. In addition income arising from such an arrangement would need to be declared to the revenue commissioners resulting in a likely tax liability"

It is also alleged the AGHE as part of their approach suggest that once the individual has completed their Trained Person/Hunter requirements for the sale of game to AGHE’s, they can sign off on the carcasses they purchase as having met the necessary inspection requirements. Again this is incorrect and an offence as the requirements state “person (trained person/hunter) was present when the animal was shot”.

"Such illegal practices ultimately encourage poaching and the illegal trading of game in Ireland. This is nothing short of black-market economics on game that is already threatened"

"If you have received any such approach or are aware of an individual involved in this illegal practice please contact the Dept of Agriculture, Meat Hygiene 057 869 4479 or your local NPWS Conservation Ranger, alternatively you can email us on wilddeerireland@gmail.com"
