Good luck with that. Their licensing laws are the most restrictive in 'the land of the free'. You cant by beer over 4% volume outside of State Liquor Stores and if you get remotely buzzed in a bar; they will cut you off.

Perhaps seeing as you're visiting one of the most scenic and unspoilt states in the US you should visit one of their national parks. Zion National Park, or the Canyonlands are breathtaking. If you're not that physically fit and don't fancy hiking around the parks then The Leonardo museum of science and contemporary culture would be a much better way to spend your time than having "a few pints" is some shrine to paddywhackery.

Sure they will - if you cross into another state. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_laws_of_Utah - Anything above "3.2 percent alcohol by weight (4 percent by volume)" is hard liquor.

It's funny Texas is one of the strictest by hours, but the most lenient on underage drinking.

Be sure to visit Monument Valley and Lake Powell when you're there.

I done a road trip across the states a few years ago and Utah was my favourite state. And I say that as a 24 years old Irish fella who was just looking for a party at the time! Breathtaking scenery, amazing valleys, great for hiking. Neighbouring Colorado was a close second with the Rocky mountains.

    This .

You are so lucky to be living there for awhile - the scenery is simply STUNNING.

As well as above National Parks, Bryce Canyon and Arches National park are amazing.

edit - Monument Valley too ... I was thinking Arizona, but it's right on the edge of UTAH ... enjoy !!

Spent two weeks in Salt Lake City three years ago (for work)

Mormons who practise wont drink, (conversely ones that dont practise do drink)

There is/was an Irish bar over there too (fairly close to the centre of SLC)

When you are there try and get up to Park City pretty awesome drive (for a short drive from SLC)
Or a short drive away is the sundance ski resort (all of which relate to the film festival)

I drove from SLC to Vegas as well pretty cool road trip (about 8 hour drive)
The drive around St George by the bottom of Utah is pretty cool

If you like to shoot too, its a good place to go to ranges etc (work folk took me)

Was just in Utah for a few days and the bars were the same as most I've been to in any state. They certainly weren't cutting people off who were drunk. If you want to have stronger booze at home why not the state line and fill up a rental car.
If you do get bored, you're only a short hop to vegas.

Look for the punks. There's a pretty large punk and metal scene, and they will have booze. Might even get invited to a show or several.

Last year we went to the southwest USA in 10 days and managed to get in Joshua Tree,Grand Canyon,Monument Valley,Zion and Bryce Canyon - after seeing some of Utah (Zion, Bryce) I looked up other parks afterwards and realised you could spent a whole month just in Utah alone !!

So sorry we WASTED 4 days in that sh*thole Vegas ..
