Just looking for some advice. Thinking of going on holidays next week and have pretty much narrowed it down to these two destinations. Which did people prefer? I suppose what im looking for is a place where there is a good bit to see such as interesting towns to potter around etc.

I have been to both places and much preferred Sorrento. Stayed in Sorrento and travelled along the Amalfi Coast. The area is just incredible, amazing scenery and food. The sights are out of this world, I highly recommend it!

I've been to both also and they are very different but equally beautiful.
My personal preference is Lake Garda. I'm just back from another visit there. Stayed in Desenzano on the south west of the lake. There is so much to see and the scenery is spectacular. From the towns on the south side you can make day trips to Venice, Verona & Milan. Both Desenzano and Peschiera are on the main Milan-Venice rail line. Using the trains is very easy. There is also a good public ferry service on the lake itself which makes visiting other towns around the lake easy. The north end of the lake is spectacular with the Dolomites as the backdrop but the weather can be a bit dodgy.

Must see towns are Sirmione, Salo/Gardonne and Malcesine.

On the other hand the weather in Sorrento would probably be better at this time of year. Naples is well worth a visit although do be careful of pickpockets as in all tourist cities, Naples has a poor reputation with regards crime.
You can't go wrong with either destination if it's sightseeing you want.

If you're not looking at a package deal then would you not start in Garda for 3/4 days and get the train to Rome and on to Naples-sorrento?

My personal preference would be sorrento, but only just!

*dont spend anymore than 37 seconds in Naples, what a kip!

Thanks everyone for the responses. It is a package holiday I will be going on. Right now the options are a hotel 15 minutes outside Sorrento three star or a four star 3km outside Sirmione.

I suppose im looking not so much to have a beach holiday but to explore little towns, markets etc. Anyone have an idea what the price of the train from Sorrento to Rome is? Presume you have to go through Naples to get it?

    http://www.trenitalia.com/

click on the flag at the top right for the English version. Put in the cities in Italian - Napoli/Roma.
You would have to get the local train from Sorrento to Naples and then the fast train to Rome.

Might leave Rome for another trip.......bit further then I expected. Think im going to pick Sorrento and do trips to Pompey, Naples, Positano and Capri maybe.

Will only have a week, are these the best places to visit in the area?

We were in Sorrento in late July for a week , we hired a car and drove from Naples to Sorrento . We visited Pompeii , took the ferry to Capri did Positano and the Amalfi coast (not for the faint hearted driver).
Capri is well worth a visit very expensive ,
We stayed in the grand hotel la pace in sant agnello it's a 5 star but it was a better deal than some of the 4 star as it's a little further out but it has a shuttle bus into Sorrento a couple of times a day.
Pompeii was amazing we did it on a rainy day which was ideal as it would be hell in the heat.
