Brake and Gear cable change

    I noticed some frayed strands on rear derailleur cable at the shifter end.

    Garmin tells me i've just over 10,000km on this road bike (3 years old) so i was thinking of replacing both inner and outer cables for brakes and gears.

    What do people think is that the best idea to just replace the lot after that kind of distance / age?

    Anyone recommend good cables / kit to replace all the cables both brake and gear.
    The groupset is shimano tiagra / 105 mixture.

    I replace inners and outers every year or so, cheap enough. I've used jagwire and cheaper clarks cables and didn't notice much difference. Decent cable cutter helps, as does making sure you have some old cable in the outers at the place you cut them. Also get the proper terminators to avoid frayed strands.

    Yeah need to get a decent cutter as well to be honest, like that bit of advice to have old cables in at the point of cut, i'll use that idea.

    Definitely change inner and outer at this stage. If the cable breaks, it usually breaks in the shifter body and can be a B***h to get out.

    I would just replace the frayed inner cable and it is common enough with that kind of distance. Everything else should be OK. The cable for the rear mech is the one that is subject to the most wear and the reason the brake cables don't snap is that they are a different guage with a bigger safety factor. I can't remember ever changing a front mech or brake cable. Clarks inner gear cables @ approx 5 Euro a pair from Chain Reaction Cycles are good value.

    Do you not find that over time the gear cables become very stiff and makes gear changing more difficult? The same with the rear brake cable. (not so much with the front brake)

    I find if you replace the inner cable only, it will improve things for a short period (your fitting a new cable into a worn outer cable), but you can't beat replacing both inner and outer for improved performance.
