Terminating employment

    Hey all,

Currently in a role with a reasonable staff turnover rate, however, company is not hiring anybody. This means that we have huge amounts of work. It keeps pilling on, and when we cannot get it done quick enough, or the standard of work slips, we have a lot of pressure from all directions.

I am really close to terminating my employment with immediate effect, but I am not 100% sure of the legal side here. I am supposed to give 1 month notice, if you quit before then, is there anything they can do?

    You won't expect a reference I assume.
Give them notice. Leave on good terms.
You do know that there is a qualifying period for social welfare if you leave the job yourself.

Could you maybe stick it out and look for a new job? Check your contract for your notice period and just abide by that. If you are not there too long it might only be a week or 2. Try to leave on good terms if possible.

Listen to the above poster, stay in the job until you find something else. The job market is competitive and you don't want to be left with nothing

This question comes up a few times each week, so it might be worth your while using the search function to find old replies.

    But in general:

    - Give the notice as per your contract. If you have no contract, give the required minimum notice (look on citizens information for more...information).
    - If you don't give the required notice, it's highly unlikely they will sue you or whatever, but you won't be able to use them as a reference. Also, Ireland is small, so this could have repercussions for you.

I suggest you speak to your manager, explaining you are completely burnt out.

Christ, days are bad, but today was just nuts. You know you have these days when everything works against you. It's been like that for weeks now.

I'm in a growing industry and my skills are sought after. Had a couple of interviews a while back. Too senior, too junior were both answers. Kinda annoying when they approach you.

I'll stick it out for a bit longer, but I won't be there this time next year, i'll end up with a heart attack.

PS, I spoke to my manager multiple times, but their hands are tied. So they say anyway.

This too will past - a tad glib but a lot of us have been in the same boat as the OP and can very emphatically sympathise. Try and stick it out while searching for a new role (as it seems that there are management issues in the current position) and use the experience to show how you've coped in stressful and challenging environments.
