The age old bike lock thread

will soon be buying a 2 nd hand bike to the value of 200 euro max.

Will also try and buy a 2nd hand lock

there are a few kryptonite locks on adverts for about 40 euro.

like evolution series 3 and 4...... but they seem to get some bad reviews about the key being ****e. and there are so many krypton ite locks out there its hard to choose. The new York kryptonite seems to be Savage but just too dear.

Can anyone recommend a half decent lock ?

Got this last year on Amazon. It's big and heavy, but no problems so far. Price not too bad on amazon.co.uk either. approx €60 and should be free delivery.

The small orange Kryptonites have worked for me for the last 7 odd years around dublin. No bike stolen....yet.

Thanks very much Pete. Do you know what the exact name of this lock is ?

It's quite small but my bike allows me to catch the stand, the rear wheel and the frame in one go. It's a tight squeeze. Your bike might not allow this.

Thanks. are the "mini" locks actually stronger than the standard size kryptonite locks ?

or is it just down to the fact that the mini is smaller and therefore more tricky for scumbags to get at ?

I have the same question as this if anyone knows ? Also I'm thinking of buying one of the mini New York locks. But its hard to tell if these are large enough to go around the frame, wheel and bike rack at the same time?

Makes it more difficult to get a tool in there. But not impossible.
Also prevents the thief from using the bike as lever to pop the lock. Some thieves will just lift the bike and start turning it to pop a crap lock.

Nothing is 100% thief proof it's just a matter of making yours more difficult to steal than the next bike. Which, given the standard of locking in Dublin, is not difficult.
