PSP for retro emulation?

I've often seen people raving about these and how good they are for emulating the older systems when modded.

I've done some Googling but there's an awful lot of outdated information out there. I don't suppose some kind person could tell me what model psp I should get with a view to modding it please?

I wouldn't be too fond of it as an emulator to be honest. The aspect ratio is all wrong and the controls are fairly horrendous.

If you are going to get one though, get a PSP Slim and Light model. The softmod is simple (and you can keep the console stock) and it's much more comfortable to use than the original larger PSP IMO.

Its good if you don't mind not playing snes games. Everything else 16bit and down should be fine.

  • Are you serious? No SNES? That's a deal breaker for me.

There's a couple of snes emulators but to my knowledge none of them are that great. I haven't looked at them in a good few years though so things might have changed.

Yes, I don't think any of the SNES emulators worked well on the PSP. I only ever got some games working & they all had video and sound issues.

I did have good experiences with Neo Geo, Sega Master System and NES emus.

Its fun and cheap enought for what you can do, especially with the composite cable to connect it to a TV. Getting that going with the emulators was very difficult I recall.

The sony xperia play is worth getting solely for snes emulation, but as long as that emulation is through snesoid, it just works best imo

Not sure on the reviews on this but :

Wasn't there a thread on some Chinese handheld emulation machine. Was preloaded with 100's of different megadrive / SNES games and you could also load your own.

Think it might have been in bargain alerts. Might be worth rooting for. If I'm rembering right it was pretty decent.

There's tons of chinese android handhelds. I have gpd-g5a. Its not bad for what it is.

What did you go for after (if anything) ?

I'm thinking of getting an Xperia Play as I'd like to play GBA, Megadrive, SNES and some Arcade stuff
I was also looking at the GCW Zero, Dingoo A330 and the newer JXD S7800b
I think the Zero is pretty hard to get, the Dingoo a bit underpowered anad teh JXD seems nice but a bit big for gaming on the go.
I'd also like to keep costs as low as possible so I'm thinking a second Xperia Play ticks all the boxes.

I got a GCW Zero a few months back and love it. Plays all the stuff you mention and the physical controls are pretty good.

Ya they're hard to get hold off, I imported mine for the US but dragonbox.de have some in stock now I think.

  • I actually got a PSP but I have it only a short while and only tested Megadrive stuff. I'm curious about the Xperia Play though. I actually had one when it first came out (there was a bargain alert for it) but I just kind of never did much with it. Where are you looking at getting one from? Obviously there's eBay but I see them for around €60 on AliExpress.

Was thinking second-hand really on adverts etc.

  • Did you get your Xperia Play? The one I got from AliExpress was brand new!! Only took two weeks to arrive and fantastic condition. Really great for only €60.

    Yep - I got it.
I've installed emulators for Arcade, SNES, GBA, GB, Megadrive
Works great - well happy with it.
What did you put on yours ?

I was tempted to put CyanogenMod on it but I'm not sure how it would affect the joypad and buttons so I've left it alone for now.

  • I put Gin2KitKat on it and it's a lot better. Haven't really done too much else with it to be honest as I'm waiting for a MicroSD. I think I need to use Link2SD to increase the Play's internal storage however that information could be outdated.

Interesting - had heard of Gin2KitKat. I presume all the buttons on the joypad etc. work fine ?

You could just get the best phone you were going to buy anyway and get a bluetooth controller for it, PS3 controllers work fine and there are cradles on Ebay for 2 quid to hold the phone on top of the controller. I have a generic iPega controller that works very well, starting a replay of Zelda LttP on my OnePlus with it now. Also a powerful phone can run a PSP emulator near perfectly these days, good for FFVII and a few other remasters that were released in the PSPs day. Going to play Valkyria Chronicles 2 on mine over Christmas I think, will report back but the reviews of the PSP emulators are very good. 16 bit and down have been flawless for years, so is PSX but theres not much on that I want to play.
