I am thinking of getting a 50 inch tv for a small bedroom and want to find out would 4 feet be too close to sit from the screen. I know the recommended distance is 6.5 feet. I don't want it to look like the cinema when you are sitting in the front row.

Yes that's too close in my opinion .
Standard definition will look terrible at that distance,HD might be ok .
Get a smaller tv if you will only be 4 feet away.

That would be like watching a tennis match from the side line!

A 32" screen would be more than enough for distance like that - go into a shop and check them out
