What's the best city simulator out there?

I've had cities XL on my steam account for a year and just played 20mins of it there. Kinda looks cool, in so far as I selected Paris as a base map to start with and it's pretty big. But, as usual, when you create roads, residential areas etc, it looks like typical American square grids and typical American Homer Simpsons type houses, with you know lawn to the front, law to back, all boxed in with a nice timber fence and everything same size.

So question is, is there any city sim out there that's actually a realistic sim of a city? As in something that follows the medieval evolution & pattern of European urban cities like London or Paris, crooked windy streets, houses that are you know, Georgian tenement building type stuff. I want to see Patina on copper roofs with parapets, not a pitch slate roof from bungalow bliss.
    :)

The Anno series might be of interest. Not strictly a City sim tho.
